Womyn MCs: Project Blowed

“The Females of the underground who practice their lyrical skills at Project Blowed do so with determination, skill, and a great sense of self worth. Their discourse represents their knowledge as women who desire to thrive in a society that is sexist, racist, and biased against the working class. They recognize that participation in hip hop as equals is also a political act that highlights the life of women throughout society in both direct and indirect ways.” Female artist get booed off the stage at Project Blowed just like the men that don’t “bring it” however project Blowed also offers womyn a place to show their lyrical skills as well as speak their opinions about what it is like to be a young black woman in America. Womyn in the underground have used their lyrical skill to “expose the bigotry” about being black a woman or both so that it can be critiqued, and provide insight and memories about what it is like to live under various forms of oppression. Project Blowed for womyn is not seen as an ideal place but rather one “populated by those searching to confront power.” One artist that goes by Medusa confronts power and specifically sexism effectively in her song Pimps down flows up. The song she raps about how in hip hop pimp and whore personas “overwhelm the characterization of hip hop artists and female fans…the pimp whore stereotype undermines hip hop black people, and womyn as a whole.”(Morgan, 152) in this rap she critiques artists who seek out the attention of womyn and then treat them like objects. Here it is check it out…
