I have a very charismatic friend,
Danny, who has a dream to become a “famous rapper.” He dropped his first two tracks last spring. Danny is white, Jewish, and grew up in
an upper-middle class home in London.
Within the last two months he has been getting a lot of very good
attention from various websites, blogs, and even clothing companies. A couple of weeks ago he dropped his
first EP with four tracks before he will release his upcoming mixtape titled
Teaspliffs. In this “prequel,” he
received 20,000 plays and 800 downloads in the first two weeks of its release
and numbers keep growing.
The
question I have is, how is he getting so popular while being the exact opposite
of so many of the stereotypes in hip hop.
Let me remind you that he is white, British, Jewish, and did not come
from the “hood.” The reason I
mention that he is Jewish is because it is pretty rare to find a famous Jewish
rapper.
In
one of his songs, he compares himself to the legendary rapper Slick Rick, who
was very popular in the 90’s and also came from London. Danny references himself the “young
fresh white slick rick” in one of his songs. He brags, about being an egotistical skinny white boy and
stealing other people’s girlfriends.
Although he comes from London, like Slick Rick, Danny creates a whole
different subculture of his own.
His music is like nothing you have ever heard. It is extremely distinct. This may be the reason why he is
continuing to get more and more popular.
His
identity and looks, also known as his “swag,” are very alternative. He doesn’t wear baggy clothes, drink 40-ounce
beers, or carry a gun. Danny is an
up and coming artist whom I am sure will become legendary, prominent, and a
significant figure to the hip hop movement.
