You got #threeeyes #threeeyes, THREE EYES, but you could never see III’s (eyes)

Ironically today in class we watched a video about one of my favorite up an coming artists Ab-Soul of TDE/Black Hippy that consists of Ab-Soul (“Soulo”), Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, and Schoolboy Q. The group is one of my favorites as well; they just keep it real to what they’re seeing. They’re just regular dudes from L.A. who could rap with purpose, which is how it should be. Soulo’s purpose is basically to put people out there by talking about drugs, double standards, and politics – all relevant to almost every American. I love this dude.

Below I have posted another video of his of the song “Pineal Gland.” This song was on the same album as “Terrorist Threats” (below as well) titled “Control System.” This album has been in my rotation for around three months now.

Have a look.

Crazy, right. But you see where it goes.

So first, there was a Backwood wrap (in 1st person) with what you would think is just weed; but oh, remember the line: “please don’t tell my momma this ain’t Marijuana!” So what is it?

He’s smart in how he brings that cliché maneuver of a blunt, but breaks it within the song with:
  • A tattoo of the “Seed of Life” (further research: http://www.tokenrock.com/explain-Flower-of-Life-46.html
  • his conscious lyrics of his brain
  • bringing the frames back in this Widescreen video
  • spastic movements with the video
  • Fire
  • Lots of flashing
  • Explosions that sort-of match the consistency of his curly hair (CRAZY)
  • American Flag on his shirt
  • The image of the dollar and the pyramid on the dollar (Illuminati reference?)
  • The fact that is not weed, but it is Dimethyltryptamine, the drug that triggers your Pineal Gland (hence the song)

I thought all of these elements reinforce the point that Ab-Soul will draw you in, have you thinking, and most likely leave you healthily confused – but conscious!

I am not the most comfortable talking about drugs, especially drastic ones like DMT. However it directly fits the context of the song. This drug "causes powerful and short-lived hallucinations for users" (Livestrong) and activates your Pineal gland - your third. Intense. (For more info, see ling at the bottom).

Some of my favorite lyrics in this song were (I have my interpretations under):
  • “we in a space where matter don’t matter, just spirit molecules and geometric patters”
    • Your mind controls you (hence the phrase, “Mind over matter”)
OR

    • Since he’s on this drug, he may feel like he’s in space and isn’t a real person, with real gravity, and just a molecule…(well thank you RapGenius)
  • “I make my dreams reality…so to speak”
    • Perception as reality. Bow.
  • “last nigga tried to scratch the surface broke a nail”
    • The last person that tried to get to his level hurt themselves/couldn’t do it.
  • “last nigga tried to cross the line got crucified” (insert pic)
    • Jesus reference. He likes Jesus.
  • “genius idiot, best description of myself”
    • The usual case with smat boys who know they’re smart, but are good and possibly funny guys.
      • In his words, it is that he is a “walking contradiction”

There were many things that were amazing about this video. But what do you think about:
  • Shapes flashing
  • Triangles & circles (maybe “Seed of Life?”)
  • HIM ENDING UP ON A COUCH IN THE END.
    • Don’t do drugs.

I’m probably going to watch this video a good 10-20 more times.

There's a bunch more that can be said about this song. Let me know what's on your mind!

I hope you all enjoyed. Here’s a link to the album: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/control-system/id525933456

  1. Thanks for sharing. i like what im hearing about the black hippy group forming.

Im trying to figure out why the words that flash on the video are often opposite of what he is saying. Is it just meant to be another trippy illusion or is there meaning to it?

When he says "future", the word "past" shows up.

    So many contradictions...
