Sports and Hip Hop

Wiz Khalifa came out with Black and Yellow was released at the end of March in 2011, during the football season.  He wrote his song for his Pittsburgh teams: the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Pittsburgh Steelers.  That year, the Steelers made it to the Superbowl and that song was played in their honor, like the theme song for the Steelers.  They were playing the Green Bay Packers in the Superbowl, so in response, Lil' Wayne remade the song and titled it Green and Yellow in their honor.

This is a common theme in Hip-Hop: making a rebuttal song.  What I find interesting between these two songs is that Black and Yellow alludes to the Pittsburgh teams, and doesn't mention what the song is ever about.  Green and Yellow on the other hand is blatantly obvious as to its intentions and states the Packers' name as well as puts down the Steelers'.

Let me know what you think!

  1. My family being from Pittsburgh, "Black and Yellow" I never thought was just about sports. All sports teams from Pittsburgh do wear the colors black and yellow, but I think Wiz Khalifa is speaking about having pride for Pittsburgh and using those colors as essentially a more clever way than just chanting Pittsburgh. Black and yellow in that city do hold the connotations of sports, but they hold much more. Under those two colors is essentially a unified city.

And personally, I think Lil' Wayne just need a song to parody by using as little of his own creativity as possible and so he decided to make "Green and Yellow" Yes, Green and Yellow is all about the Packers, which is interesting because Lil' Wayne is from New Orleans, but regardless he just wanted to represent "his" team and put down the other without exerting too much creativity.
