What Comes in Mind
When I asked a couple of my friends and roommates what was the first thing that came to mind when the heard the word Hip Hop they mentioned many things that I wouldn't expect them to say but we covered some of this stuff in class so I guess they are heading in the right track.

Grills have been set as an image that pops up to peoples mind when they hear of a Hip Hop artist

2 Pac came in mind and this songs as well.
Alcohol is a major part than many see as a luxury to see who can drink the most or buy the expensive bottles that is one of the reason many mentioned alcohol

Some of the things or words were: 2 pac, black, microphone, bitches and hoes, paper bag, bottles, low riders hotel parties, money booty booty rocking everywhere, grill, shades, hats gangs, bling, saggy pants, sex, alcohol animal fur, guns, robbing, gold, expensive houses and cars

  1. I think a lot of these themes mentioned can be found in all hip hop whtether it be mainstream or the underground "conscious rap." Whichever subgenre it falls under, the opression of gays women, money, alcohol, weed, drugs can be found in both categories. That being said, I think the rest of these themes can only be found in commercialized radio rap that seems to have the more mainstream appeal. Interesting post though as we have discussed and unpacked many of those themes in class.

    1. To be honest, yeah, it's everywhere. Would you say that they are necessary to have to come up in the mainstream? Why do you think that rappers stick to the shit if it is what gets them in the door?

  2. All these themes are a part of hip hop but I do not think they should be used to define it and I think that is what a lot of main stream hip hop is doing. It may be stereotypical part of the hip hop lifestyle but I believe that there is more to be explored with it and if and how much artists are paid by companies to rep this stuff. In the end I think it really comes down to how much money you make at the end of the day. The corporations or big man really does force this stuff done our throats in more aspects then just hip hop. Hip hop is just a way of making sure the youth get these messages.
